Masquerade (installation) at Curated by_vienna at Georg Kargl Fine Arts, Vienna

20 exhibitions in Viennese contemporary art galleries conceptualized by more than 20 international curators.

Art and capital

curated by_vienna was initiated by the Vienna Business Agency's creative unit, departure, in 2009 to support systematic cooperation between Viennese contemporary art galleries and international curators. Vienna boasts a vibrant contemporary art scene as a European metropolis at the crossroads between North and South, East and West, tradition and innovation. In addition to its world-class museums and non-profit organizations, there are numerous excellent galleries that have earned an international reputation through cutting-edge programmes.

Reflections on the intersections between art and capital provide the impetus for curated by_vienna 2015. Philosopher Armen Avanessian's epynomous essay "Tomorrow Today" addresses artistic strategies for a post-capitalist era. https://viennabusinessagency.at/creative-industries/curated-by-vienna/about-curated-by-vienna/concept/
Avanessian explores future (and already existing) alternative models of art and economy. More than 20 international curators have embarked upon this experiment and are presenting exhibitions on the topic in 20 selected Viennese galleries.

Vermeir & Heiremans film 'Masquerade' will be exhibited in the exhibition Subtle patterns of Capital, curated by Barnabas Bencsik at Georg Kargl Fine Arts

The show brings together artistic positions which represent and explore various approaches and layers of the interrelations between art and economy, artistic creativity and its exploitation, the speculative characteristics of the global art market, the virtualization of objects and the economy as a whole including artefacts, the critical questioning of the evaluation-system and the function of art as an asset in the neoliberal market economy.
