The Viennale special program 'Between Inner and Outer Space' focuses on art spaces: museums, galleries and exhibition spaces as central places of presentation, and studios as production sites. The six programs in this presentation are comprised mainly of short films, which are arranged thematically and revolve around esthetic, economic, performative, architectural and political issues. The series was inspired by David Lamelas’s A Study of Relationships between Inner and Outer Space (1969). The Argentinean artist’s film takes an empty exhibition space as its starting point to subsequently sketch the social, urban, sociological and climatic conditions of London, before proceeding to simple, subversive street interviews and finally closing with the Moon landing. Away from the white cube, away from conservative institutions was a popular motto during the 1960s and 1970s, which is also reflected in Da ist eine kriminelle Berührung in der Kunst (1976) by Ulay and Mono Lake (1968/2004) by Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson. At present this movement appears to be retrograde. Even the alternative and subcultural art scene is meanwhile in direct alliance with established institutions. The way in which the latter present themselves under today’s changed socio-political conditions is also recounted in Scena (2003) by Deimantas Narkevicius and The Good Life (2009) by Ronny Heiremans und Katleen Vermeir.
